This Sanding Sealer from U-Beaut is a traditional sanding sealer, not a grain filler!
Sanding a piece of wood tears at the grain and even after the finest sanding, this torn grain is evident almost as soon as the finish is applied. Nine times out of ten, the torn grain will swell and stand up in the finish, giving you a feeling that sand has been thrown on your work.
This sanding sealer is designed to raise that swelling (nap), making it stand up and become brittle. This means it can then be sanded off with a fine grit abrasive paper, giving a silky smooth base for you to apply your finish to with no fear of the nap raising again.
This Sanding sealer can also be used as a retarder (a sealer that allows dyes and stains to be applied to the surface of most timbers without it going blotchy). Because of it's nature, you can apply a water dye over this sealer (after sanding) and it will soak into the timber evenly. When applied to end grain timber and then sanded, it will stop the stain going dark in the grain.
You can use this Sanding sealer as a base for wax finishes by applying 2-3 coats and allowing to dry, then applying U-Beaut traditional wax.
Please note: This is not recommended for use over or under spirit based dye or stain, it is only for use with water based or turpentine based stains and dyes. Also, never use steel wool as an abrasive on raw timber.
